EXAMPLES of OUR WORK
Below are examples of our past work in our main practice areas. Past results are not necessarily indicative of future results. Outcomes will vary according to the facts of each individual case.
Civil Litigation
- Worked with other lawyers in a multi-million dollar fraud case involving several large companies and dozens of defendants. Over several years, the proceedings included multiple examinations, mass mediation sessions, bankruptcy proceedings, investigations, and tracing of assets.

- Researched and advised investors about making a claim against the perpetrators of an investment scheme which defrauded numerous investors of their savings. When the fraudster was presented with the demand based on our research and the threat of massive litigation against the fraudster and several related parties, a settlement was promptly reached.
- Successfully negotiated recovery of money from a municipality for negligence which caused significant property damage to a home.
Debt Collection
- Made demands for unpaid amounts based on contracts prepared by us previously. The debtor paid all arrears by the specified deadline.
- Traced a bankrupt debtor's assets to their spouse's property, then started a lawsuit against both the debtor and their spouse based on a fraudulent conveyance. Both defendants settled shortly after being served with the claim.
- Sued a company that had closed down its business without paying the client's account. Even though no recovery was possible against the primary defendant, we drafted a creative claim suing various other parties, ultimately resulting in recovery from the added parties.
- Conducted countless examinations in aid of execution to identify judgment debtors' assets for garnishment and seizure.
Security Enforcement
- Several years experience of acting for finance companies in repossessing secured equipment throughout the province, including coordinating with bailiffs, investigators, and pursuing claims against very uncooperative debtors.
- Processed several powers of sale, some together with repossession of equipment at the same time, and involving last-minute settlement negotiations.
- Brought dozens of successful motions in Superior Court for orders enabling clients to recover equipment, including seeking contempt orders against uncooperative defendants.
Construction Liens
- Registered and served several liens in one day, on short notice, against a contractor that owed a sub-contractor money on multiple large projects. The prompt registration of liens resulted in a full settlement of the outstanding amount in about a week.
- Protected a sub-contractor's lien on a major public works project involving numerous lien claimants and other parties, and eventually recovered the outstanding amount despite legal uncertainties and opposition from the owner.
- Conducted an extensive trial of a construction contract dispute involving several witnesses and detailed technical testimony, resulting in judgment for the contractor and subsequent recovery of all damages.
Estate Administration
- Represented an individual whose spouse had died without a will and other parties were uncooperative and adversarial. All matters were resolved without litigation.
- Advised a beneficiary about dealing with estate assets, setting up trusts, communicating with an uncooperative executor, and resolving technical problems with the will.
- Represented an executor during estate administration involving multiple jurisdictions.
Business Organization
- Restructured a pre-existing corporation into a professional corporation, and brought it into compliance with the regulator's requirements, thus saving the expense of registering a new corporation.
- Organized and structured new operating and holding companies in conjunction with a commercial real estate purchase so as to protect the business's and shareholders' assets and comply with the lender's requirements.
- Reorganized multiple corporations and assets to achieve tax savings and manage risk in cooperation with accountants.
Contract Drafting
- Structured a very complex joint venture agreement for a new business idea, along with related documents.
- Drafted several highly customized commission agreements to protect a broker's interests and prevent other parties from attempting to use various loopholes to the broker's detriment.
- Prepared several specialized financing and investment contracts for various businesses, each of which had to be adapted for a unique business context.
Commercial Real Estate
- Represented a large business on a multi-million dollar real estate purchase and associated corporate restructuring, including negotiations with an uncooperative tenant.
- Advised a small business owner in a very acrimonious lease dispute, and negotiated the termination of the lease to be more in the tenant's favour.
- Advised a broker whose client was contemplating a multi-million dollar industrial purchase not to proceed with the deal because problems with the property would expose the buyer to huge potential liabilities and costs.
Trademarks
- Successfully obtained allowance of a trademark despite a pre-existing similar trademark, which we caused to be expunged from the trademarks register due to the pre-existing owner failing to use the mark in Canada.
- Helped a small business resist a multinational company's attempts to prevent the small business from using an existing trade name. The multinational alleged infringement of their trademark, which was groundless and had no basis in law. The allegations ended after the multinational received our written response.
Estate Planning
- Set up and drafted complex estate plans for numerous business owners, involving multiple wills, private corporations, international issues, and detailed trust provisions.
- Structured an advanced shareholder agreement in cooperation with the shareholder's other advisors to protect the shareholder and the corporation, and ensured that the shareholder's corporate and estate planning matters were all coordinated and worked together to cover various contingencies.
- Drafted wills and supporting contracts between family members to ensure assets would be managed appropriately in case of death or incapacity in the family.
Consulting and Research
- Researched and advised on a possible claim against a major financial institution involving highly technical interpretations of financial regulations. Ultimately, we advised not to proceed as there was very little prospect of success.
- Reviewed a business plan, researched applicable laws and regulations, and provided detailed advice and supporting materials about how to comply with the rules applicable to the industry.
- Provided several legal opinions and information about creditors' remedies and litigation issues to a financing company, including cases dealing with secured creditor's interest in insurance proceeds.
- Advised several homeowners of their options in disputes with uncooperative neighbours who were causing a nuisance.
